Nell and Georgie

When you’re looking into your family history something new always crops up. That’s what makes it so exciting and worthwhile. I really thought I was coming to the end of the Dinnis family, and then my lovely cousin turns up with something else! Previously we had looked in my grandmother’s notebook and seen lists of names, some of which we recognised and some we didn’t. The notebook was put away.

Time was spent looking into our grandfather’s family history, names were added to the family tree and we got to know more about these people. The notebook came out again, and gradually we realised that the names were all familiar. They weren’t just names, they were family members.

There were a couple of other names we still didn’t know - Nell and Georgie. Who were they? They had to be family members because they were listed alongside Grandad’s (Joseph Taylor Dinnis) brothers. A couple of names on the family tree that weren’t accounted for were Helen May Brereton (George John Dinnis’s wife) and their son, George. It turns out Nell is a shortened name for Helen, and not only that – my cousin found a photograph of them, with their names written on the back – Nell and Georgie, the wife of my grand-uncle and my first cousin once removed. Here they are, I’d like you to meet them:

Nell and Georgie (Helen May Brereton)There’s nothing like seeing a relative for the first time, it really does feel as though you’re meeting them. And they do feel like a part of the family. It’s another wonderful example of something that was there all the time, just waiting to be found.

  1. I’m really enjoying meeting your family, along the journey with you. It seems by posting these old photos, you bring them to life again, if just for a moment.
